WMM – Introduction to Multimedia

The course introduces students to the fundamentals of signal and information processing in the context of multimedia technology. The lectures cover the processing, compression, generation and analysis of video and audio signals. The course is taught jointly with the Electroacoustics Division (ZEA) of IRiTM.

KODA – Data Compression

The lecture covers the theoretical foundations and methods of data coding and the principles of implementing simple compression algorithms, reviews contemporary tools and standards, and formulates contemporary compression paradigms. The theoretical outline includes the fundamentals of information theory (source models, coding rules and source distortion). Particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of image data codecs. Students learn, among other things, prefix, arithmetic and dictionary coding algorithms, as well as JPEG, JPEG 2000, PNG and the MPEG family.
Lecturer: Grzegorz Pastuszak, PhD, DSc, Associate Professor

MATMU – Mathematics in Multimedia

The lecture covers the theoretical foundations of the methods and algorithms used in the compression, recognition, indexing, embedding and modelling of multimedia objects. As a result, students acquire basic knowledge of the mathematical models underlying multimedia standards and the ability to program and apply mathematical models in typical multimedia applications.
Lecturer: Prof. Władysław Skarbek, PhD, DSc

GSN – Deep Neural Networks for Digital Media

The course covers the theory and practice of deep neural networks in the context of their applications in digital media. The lecture presents the basic computational units (including convolutional units), the mechanisms for combining units into blocks (including sequential and residual blocks) and into architectures (including the autoencoder, U-Net and recurrent network), as well as elements of stochastic gradient optimisation of loss functions and the choice of loss function. The applications discussed include signal filtering, object detection and recognition in images and audio, automatic annotation of images and audio, 3D modelling for human–machine interfaces, and image and audio compression.
Lecturers: Prof. Władysław Skarbek, PhD, DSc, Grzegorz Gwardys, MSc

ZPDS – Data Science Product Management

The course aims to develop skills in managing projects whose outcomes are products powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), also referred to as Data Science (DS) products. It presents the main project methodologies used in delivering DS products and their limitations in the context of such undertakings. The key concepts of Product Management, the product development concept and Design Thinking are explained. Another important topic is understanding the specific nature of DS products, which on the one hand offer enormous opportunities and on the other require sensitivity to the particular characteristics of AI.
Lecturer: Grzegorz Gwardys, MSc

EADIR – Adaptive Image Recognition

The lecture covers the theory and applications of adaptive image processing, image analysis and pattern recognition techniques for the detection, classification and indexing of objects in images. Feature extraction algorithms using information on the colour, texture, motion and shape of objects are presented. Basic discriminant analysis techniques and object localisation techniques are discussed. The projects concern generic applications such as face recognition, licence plate detection in images, digit recognition, word segmentation and image retrieval based on the colour descriptors defined in the MPEG-7 standard.
Taught in English
Lecturers: Xin Chang, PhD, Prof. Władysław Skarbek, PhD, DSc

SYGSY – Signals and Systems

The course introduces students to the theory and practical aspects of the analysis and processing of one-dimensional signals in the time and frequency domains, as well as the fundamentals of analogue-to-digital conversion and analogue and digital filtering.
Lecturer: Kajetana Snopek, PhD, DSc
More: USOS

PROZE – Event-Driven Programming

The course familiarises students with the Java environment and presents the event-driven methodology for developing interactive and multithreaded applications. Practical exercises include designing and programming a sample game, including networked play. Familiarity with object-oriented methodology is assumed.
Lecturer: Krystian Ignasiak, PhD

OPA – Object Programming of Multimedia Applications in Java

The lecture deals with object-oriented programming in Java, with an emphasis on its use in programming networked (distributed) client–server, concurrent and multimedia applications. The aim of the course is to master advanced programming techniques related to network communication, to become familiar with non-standard Java packages used in multimedia applications, and to learn the practical use of Java in programming multimedia applications.
Lecturer: Krystian Ignasiak, PhD
